I woke up way too early this morning with a cough that wouldn't stop and I couldn't get back to sleep too easily. I had to endure a frivolous first hour of WPR with an interview with someone who wrote a book on "Comfort Food." Callers would call in with their own personal comfort food, one of which was sauerkraut. Sauerkraut? I don't know about you, but that's my idea of Discomfort Food. Not much in the world is more disgusting than Sauerkraut, unless there's an even more disgusting dried out pork chop served alongside it. One odd comment was that no one thinks of salad as comfort food. Huh? Well, yeah, if there's grated carrots and raisins in orange jello over lettuce, yeah, that's not exactly comforting. But what about a big salad with crunchy iceberg lettuce (I know, iceberg lettuce is not "healthy" lettuce, and I love leaf lettuce too, but we're talking *comfort food* here), tomato slices, hard boiled eggs and cheese topped with a hugely generous serving of zesty ranch dressing? Tell me that's not comforting! Sure beats what one guy called in with: a grilled bologna sandwich pressed real thin. Grossssssss!!!!!

I'd vote for pancakes or waffles or french toast with lots of syryp. Salad does not quality as a comfort food because it doesn't have simple carbs.
Are carbs what make something comfort food? I never considered that. I just thought it was anything that made you, well, comfortable.
I guess I'm the only person in the world that LOVES salads (especially with lots of dressing...surely there's carbs there!)
i like salad, too. esp ranch dressing. that sandwhich sounded just gross!!!!!!!! make me freakin ill. my parents used to ruin polish sausage by cooking it with krout. i hate it! the smell makes me want to hurl! bleck. i heard meatloaf was a comfort food. i don't know. pot roast with roast potatoes, onions, mushrooms and carrots sounds comforting to me. ummm, yum! serve with salad!
I think salad is a great comfort food. I guess the comfort food I would be self conscious of as comfort food would be whole wheat bread. I really want super spicy hot food every day, but not when I'm sick. I guess if I really needed something comforting because I wasn't feeling well it would be no salt crackers.
What exactly is "comfort food" anyway? Is it something we always want - have an emotional attachment too - only want when we feel low???
I have no idea what officially defines a comfort food. So many of the recipes they were discussing on that show had sort of a mid-20th century American quality to them.
I guess then that Sushi wouldn't qualify, even though it's something that makes you feel good.
Sauerkraut. Loved it! Especially with Eisbein. But now I don't eat anything anymore that goes with it, hence: no sauerkraut.
I can post comments again. I didn't expect it, so I'm kind of shaken, not stired.
Erik, what is Eisbein? Also, couldn't you eat sauerkraut with other things besides meat? Mashed potatoes and sauerkraut make sense to me, not that I'd eat sauerkraut, but if I would, I'd eat it with mashed potatoes. People seem to like it with pork, but I hate the kind of pork you eat it with, except for pork ribs.

Yep, I sometimes eat sauerkraut to soyasausages and such, but it isn't the same as with fat pork. Btw, I just read an american article saying that soya are making people gay ;)
